The Poultry Club Web Site is Launched! (Sept. 1999)
As you can see, The Poultry Club now has a major Web presence which will
help us in our conservation efforts and promotion of poultry keeping for pleasure. We have
our own 'domain', which will enable us to host other poultry-related sites. The site is
aimed at established fanciers, novices, young and old, and anyone with a passing interest
in poultry. It covers every aspect, and will also be of interest to schools and community
groups.
Clive Carefoot receives double honours! (Sept. 1999)
Past Poultry Club President, Dr.W.C. Carefoot (pictured) from Chipping,
Preston has been presented with the Zoological Society of London's coveted 'Stamford
Raffles Award', for his 'outstanding achievements in poultry plumage genetics'. Clive was
President of The Poultry Club in 1986-88, is a long-standing Panel 'A' Judge, as well as
being a champion breeder and exhibitor, and author of 'Creative Poultry Breeding' - a book
which sold all over the world and is now out of print. Clive received a further honour by
being elected by The Poultry Club to judge the Championship Awards at the Year 2000
National Championship Show.(More)
Ringing Scheme breaks records!
(Sept. 1999)
The Poultry Club Ringing Scheme continues to go from strength to strength,
with sales of rings reaching all-time record levels. More and more rung birds are reaching
the show pen than ever before. This was particularly noticeable on
Championship Row at a recent National Show, where many of the Champion birds were PCGB rung - including the
Champion Bantam (pictured), a Buff Plymouth Rock belonging to Val Moss. The Ringing Scheme
is a vital tool in helping to preserve all our breeds of poultry, as well as being a
valuable management tool for fanciers in helping them identify and record stock.
New Initiatives Announced!
(Mar. 1999)
The Poultry Club Council has recently announced further new initiatives.
The 1999 National Championship Show will feature a 'Juvenile Championship Row' comprising
the winners from the juvenile classes and the breed club juvenile champions. It will be
judged by the main Championship Judge and the winner will go into the main Championship
Row. The Review of the Judging Tests has also been completed and verified by Council, and
will help improve the system and quality of Poultry Club judges. Amongst the developments
are a 'Judges Newsletter', to be published every year, and a 'Judges Workshop', to be held
annually at the National Championship Show.
Buff Orpington captures National
Championship! (Dec. 1998)
At the 1998 National Championship Show, a magnificent Large Fowl Buff
Orpington Cockerel (pictured), exhibited by Mr Tom C. Clark from Devon, captured the
coveted Isherwood Perpetual Trophy for Show Champion. Mr Clark was much younger than many
of his competitors and was exhibiting at his first ever National Show. The award was not
only special for Mr Clark, but also for the Buff Orpington Club, who were celebrating
their centenary at the event.
Sam's great spirit lives on!
(Dec. 1998)
Past Poultry Club President, Panel 'A' Judge, and fancier's fancier, the
late, great Sam Lean (pictured) from Cornwall, will always be remembered at the National
Championship Show, not least by virtue of his outstanding generosity. Sam, a legendary
figure in the Poultry fancy, bequeathed an annual £50 Award to National Show, and Reserve
National, Champions. Sam was a Poultry Club member from the age of 13, becoming President
for three years 1989-91, and became an Honorary Life Member, Trustee, and Championship
Judge at the National in 1996.
Bill's
'Eggstraordinary' Feats! (Dec. 1999)
Congratulations to Bill Oldcorn (pictured) from Preston, Lancashire on his
outstanding successes in the Egg Section of the 1998 National Show. Not only did he
capture 'Champion Egg Exhibit', he also came away with awards for 'Reserve Champion Egg
Exhibit', and 'Best Egg Contents' - a clean sweep! Bill is a well-respected 'egg man',
Poultry Club Judge and Examiner, and is Secretary of the famous 'Preston and District
Poultry Egg Society'.Almost 350 plates of eggs were exhibited at the 1998 National,
consisting of well over 1000 eggs!
